Gov. Baker supports Chalvire in Ward 4 Councilor race

An already wild final weekend before Peabody’s city election on Tuesday just got even more interesting when it comes to the race for Ward 4 Councilor.

bakerFollowing a controversial Facebook comment by Mayor Ted Bettencourt’s campaign chairperson in support of incumbent Ward 4 Councilor Ed Charest, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker felt compelled this evening to put his support behind challenger Bukia Chalvire.

In her Facebook comment, the Mayor’s campaign chair began with criticism of a Chalvire campaign flier, but then wrapped up by saying that the Ward 4 challenger “has no place here.”

Since then, there’s been a heated Facebook debate over what she meant exactly by the comment. Was is racial since Chalvire is black and was born in Haiti before moving to the US and becoming a citizen? Or, was it more likely just another example of how those in power in Peabody treat new candidates like dirt?

In any event, the governor — who knows Chalvire well from her work on his campaign –came to her aid tonight, saying “Bukia is a wonderful person. She belongs anywhere and everywhere.” See the screen shot below. Could be the first time ever that the most-powerful politician in our state endorsed a candidate for a Peabody ward councilor seat:

the Mayors campaign manager should apologize and resign. The former Chair of democratic city committee making comments like this is an embarrassment to the entire city of Peabody. The mayor didn’t open his mouth to rebuke any of her statement. All he did was come out and endorse Charest after that ignorant comment. That’s what I call great leadership mayor…..After all, we are a no place for hate community.

I think resigning is a bit much. Because she said something that could’ve been easily taken out of context, does not warrant a resignation. Peabody is not a hateful community so let’s stop trying to make it one based off of one’s comment that was EXTREMELY vague.

The Mayor does not realize that having strong, intelligent, independent members of the City make Peabody better and make him better. Having a Council that questions and does independent research before voting will result in better decisions.

He seems focused on keeping his group of automatic votes intact. I believe that is why he is getting involved in this case when everyone knows he takes pics with all candidates, without endorsing them, and they all use them, Facebook is full of them.

It’s a bad look for the Mayor, who I feel is doing a solid job. This makes him seem small.

Ted is little more than an empty suit IMO. He wants a council that will do what ever he wants, and with Sinewitz leaving and some of those running who are likely to get elected being best buds with the the mayor, he is likely to get exactly what he wants regardless of what happens in ward 4.

Maybe someone should drop a dime to Black Lives Matter. I can see the protest now outside the Mayor’s office. This woman’s comment is an embarrassment to the mayor, but he seems oblivious to it.

Bob, who should we vote for tomorrow to make sure the Mayor’s lackeys don’t get in?

Haven’t made my mind up yet in a number of races.

The only sure votes I’ll cast as of right now are for are Light Commissioner Bill Aylward and Anne Manning Martin, Russ Donovan, Ryan Melville and Stephen Collins in the at-large race.
      How about you?

      • Russ Donovan November 6, 2017 at 7:55 pm #

        Thanks Bob.

        Go get ’em Russ!

I’ll be voting for Russ also and Jim Jeffries in Ward 5
