School Committee candidate forum on ‘You Make The Call’

17 Aug

The seven candidates for Peabody School Committee have been invited to appear Wednesday, 8-9 p.m., in a forum on the “You Make The Call” show on Peabody Access Telecommunications Channel 99.

The format will include each candidate briefly introducing themselves, followed by a Q&A from co-hosts Dick Jarvis and Bob Croce, and ending with each candidate presenting a closing statement.

The seven candidates, Brian Addesa, Joe Amico, Andrew Arnotis, Michel Bonbon, Brandi Carpenter, John Olimpio, and Travis Wojcik, will square off in a primary election on Tuesday, Sept. 29th.

The top six vote getters in the primary will meet in November’s final election, where they will vie for three seats on the board.

Update: So far, the only candidate to not reach out to say if he could make it on Wednesday is Mr. Bonbon. Meanwhile, Ms. Carpenter — the only incumbent in the race — has officially declined the invitation to come on the show to talk to the Peabody voters.

Will the candidates be aware of the questions ahead of time, and will each candidate be asked the same questions?

    • Bob Croce August 17, 2015 at 12:59 pm #

How it will work is that we will randomly draw a question from a hat for each candidate. The questions will all be different, but cover recent hot topics related to the schools. Candidates will appear one at a time, so we’ll also draw lots to see who gets on in what order. We’d prefer the have them all on at once, but it’s too tough to do with our small studio set up.

Will the show be live and air on Wednesday?

      • Bob Croce August 17, 2015 at 2:31 pm #

Live on Wednesday. Replayed the following Wednesday.

Have all candidates accepted your invitation to appear on the show?

    • Bob Croce August 17, 2015 at 2:14 pm #

Five have confirmed. Still haven’t heard confirmations from Ms. Carpenter and Mr. Bonbon.

An update this evening: Incumbent Brandi Carpenter has declined the opportunity to come on the show to talk with the voters of Peabody on Wednesday night.

Very surprised by this but in the end could be a good move there will not be much time during the show to respond to questions. Maybe take the questions asked below in the Anonymous August 18, 2015 at 10:27 am post and make a new post with those and the questions that you and Dick will most likely not have time to ask and invite the candidates to answer them here. Or they can answer on their Facebook pages and you can then report here. Just a thought.

Not surprised at Brandi not showing up, she is a fraud!

A forum such as this exposes what the School Committee really are all about : personal agenda, and helping themselves and their relatives at the expense of the city and kids!!!

Bob, you need to get the following questions asked and answered. These debates/discussions need to be an interview. I see more effort in candidates for my positions than I have seen from any of these candidates.

-What is one agenda item you plan on proposing, planning and implementing in your first term on the school committee? Separate from the standardized testing… (e.g. technology; school facility improvements, curriculum, school start times, communication)

-What are you going to do to prevent the challenges Peabody has had with our previous leadership issues with the superintendent?

-The school budget has barely gone up except for the fact to offset compensation increases dictated by contract. How do you feel we can have a stronger budget to bring the level of education, technology and facilities where they need to be to support the future needs of the district? What would be some bullets in the 5 year master plan that you believe would be successful.

    – How will you fix the lack of transparency and communication with the future School Committee? Website never has current meeting agenda’s and approval of minutes take forever to get on the site. Parent Advisory Board barely met last year and there was no accountability on the Co-heads of the committee.

    – Who are you and why should Peabody believe that you are the right person for the position? (Besides being a parent and a life long Peabody resident.) What are you bringing to the table to affect positive change in the Peabody school system.

-What is one weakness or area of concern that you feel that you currently have that may be challenge for you being elected in this role. What do you feel you will need to do to correct it?

    • Bob Croce August 18, 2015 at 11:12 am #

All great questions to ask. Thanks for the suggestions! With six candidates and only an hour of air time, it’s going to be difficult to go really in depth. But what I’ll likely do is ask the candidates to answer additional questions, which we can post here on the blog.

      • Anonymous August 18, 2015 at 11:52 am #

Thanks! These candidates are not saying much and it is extremely concerning to me and my family. Maybe these candidates could respond on your blog as well? I really don’t want to go through another election like we did four years ago with them all saying we are all friends and we all get along so elect us…Ben Russell didn’t have a chance with that team campaigning and I don’t want these candidates attempting to pull the same garbage for the uninformed.

    anonymous hit a bullseye!
these school committee members could not even answer one of those questions.
Yes, they say they are all friends but they would stab each other in the back in a minute for political gain.

Plus , what have they done?
Bevy Dunne has been on the committee for 10 years…. Tell me , what has she done? answer is nothing! She has done more to screw up the schools than anyone.

    Rosingnol is just a follower!

Charest and Carpenter – dumb and dumber part 3

note- has anyone asked us teachers our opinion?

    • Anonymous August 19, 2015 at 8:10 am #

Thanks Kriste for your comment on my questions. Unfortunately we allow this to continue to happen in Peabody. The culture has always been to rely on media to get these candidates to answer for who they are but Peabody being a city of 50K + does not have those vehicles.

Also, the city is being run by friends. There is really no diversity (people who didnt grow up here) within the elected officials. They all for the most part label themselves with the born and raised campaign and people in this city eat it up. I am a transplant and decided to move here. These people choose to stay knowing they have a competitive edge because of who they know. They pretty much work and live in the city and they are too afraid to leave it borders…They all take care of each other with sports and issues going on for themselves in the city.

The leader of our city has not been a strong advocate for education and continues to trust all of these parasites that ride his coat tails. He puts in a turf field which there could be some cost savings but then just in the background you see the portable classrooms at the HS…If that doesn’t speak volumes of Peabody’s focus than I don’t know what does then. Why do sports get so much funding but all of our schools lack the proper programs and technology. There are only so many slots for sports teams in HS but they get taken care of more than all the kids that have more of an interest in learning and technology. Elementary school computer labs are extremely outdated (that’s if the school has one) and there has not been a strong push to get ipads etc into these hands at a younger age to set them up for success. But hey, Peabody HS has a beautiful field…Also, he is now saying they will fix the HS auditorium so more lipstick on a pig….BTW, Malden HS is ranked in top 100, where is Peabody? And for all those Mayor supporters that will speak up about the Middle School being his idea, that project was started by the previous mayor and I bet even he would have went with a new school vs fixing the old one.

Mastercola should never have been considered as a viable candidate. I predicted where that was going from the beginning and I was sorry I was right. What’s even worse is that they brought Levine back. Why, because he is familiar with everyone…really? For a guy that is supposedly retired, he seems to make a better living than most in the city of Peabody on a retiree’s hours. He is also a huge supporter/donator of the Mayor as well as other school committee members…Can you say potential conflicts of interest? No one bats an eyelash at these decisions…So the parents get to get another year with him making bad decisions and our children will pay for it…

      • Scott B August 19, 2015 at 12:20 pm #

Well said Bob. Yes, there is a huge conflict of interest with Levine and his contributions. Why, do still not know what the buyout WAS! And how and why did it come about? The Asst. Supt. meets all of your points as well

      • KristeD August 19, 2015 at 2:07 pm #

        Said it well again anonymous!

Levine is a money grabber, look what he did in Salem- ran that district into the ground.
        Up the mayors behind constantly!
Mastercola did do a good job, he went after the lazy teachers and got stuff done. He is gone because he would not kiss the School Committee’s butts!
His only mistake was hiring Murtagh as asst superdetendant. She is unfit to be a school administrator.

Look forward to hearing the new SC candidates positions.
We know the existing ones have none.

AGREE AGREE AGREE let’s get a NEW stable Supt. and a new Ass’t as well

  7. Steve R. August 19, 2015 at 5:43 pm #

Will we see a similar type of program for the Ward seats?

  8. Salemremembers August 20, 2015 at 3:14 pm #

    Its all here folks:

    Levine GAVE over $1500……

Thats a bargain for a job that pays well over $100,000

    • Bob Croce August 20, 2015 at 3:32 pm #

I don’t get your point. There’s nothing illegal here.

      • Anonymous August 21, 2015 at 8:27 am #

Bob, its like Trump said at the debate. I pay these people to get them to do what I want. The system is broken at all levels and I am sure this level of information is never disclosed during decision making especially on the fly. That is a lot of money for local official to receive. It does smell especially with him getting all these gigs here and there through the city. It does have a tone of quid pro quo in my mind

      • Anonymous August 27, 2015 at 7:20 am #

Bob you need to blog about this. The tone of Levine doesn’t surprise me about the money because that’s ALL he cares about. So pay close the the maximums each year to the mayor in campaign contributions and let the city of Peabody fund your retirement.i have zero confidence in this board and now the mayor. rumirs are spreading…
