How do you feel the Mayor is doing?

16 Nov

It’s been almost a year since Mayor Ted Bettencourt was sworn in. We want know how you feel he did in his first year in this very unscientific poll. What letter grade would you give him?

SOLID C+ The guy has made some mistakes face it including endorsing that crook Tierney. That was very disappointing to see him do that when he had a chance to help a good guy like Tisei.

I would say solid B. He had some big challenges coming in but he did a good job, especially with the healthcare issue.

Hard to go below an ‘A’ for Mayor Ted’s first year. I supported the other guy but fair is fair.

The guy promised to reign in health care costs and he delivered with the GIC agreement.

He promised to get us a new middle school and that’s well underway with the state picking up more than half the tab.

He promised to slow down traffic on Main Street and give pedestrians and businesses a fighting chance downtown and that project is well underway.

He also promised to put the breaks on Bonfanti’s Big Dig pipe project and explore a more thoughtful approach to flood mitigation.

Oh yeah he also found time to consolidate city and school HR functions and save taxpayers some dough.

In terms of endorsing John Tierney seems like he made the right call on that one. Wouldn’t help Peabody much to have its Congressman p*ssed off at the Mayor for the next two years.

Brett, I agree on most of this. The Tierney endorsement thing kind of surprised me, since we all thought Tierney was dead man walking. But the other things you mention are definitely noteworthy accomplishments for the mayor. I’d probably give him a B+ since there are still some things I would have liked to see him accomplish. For example, we’re still no closer to a master plan for growing our commercial tax base. All in all, though, it’s been an above average first year for the mayor.

Thanks so much for visiting the blog and taking time out to comment.

Give me a break Brett…are you CREDITING Teflon Ted with all of these ‘accomplishments’??….now OG is no ardent supporter of Mayor Mike but some of these things were already in the pipeline so let’s call a spade a spade…and why wouldn’t Teflon Ted support Tierney…Party over the person!! c’mon snap out of it Brett ! Now OG will give a well earned tip of the cap for the HR consolidation work and the health care agreement that he brokered so I would give Teflon Ted a solid B at this point. Will this middle school actually open in my lifetime? Lord let’s hope so. Mayor Mike and the Emperor were both taken over the coals for their slow pace and foot dragging on downtown flooding but TeflonTed gets a pass to study and ponder the issue even more? How much have we spent on flood mitigation studies already ??? I think it’s great we have a hometown guy running the show but this voter will continue to objectively look for RESULTS..and that’s how OG sees it!

hold on now Batman…did the Emperor and Mayor Mike get the same leniency with their wait and see if we can get more federal funding approach? NO! they were scolded and villified as was our City Council for taking so long to act on this issue….I think we are creating a double standard on this issue now with Teflon Ted at the helm…all of a sudden we want to be prudent and check out all alternatives? where was the call for that cautious approach during the last administration?? this issue has been studied and debated for decades now! there is no cheap real solution! we can hope that we find one that will surely work but we won’t ! I am just amused with our sudden patience on this issue…maybe ONE MORE flooded downtown Peabody on the evening news will do the trick? this voter has run out of patience….and that’s how OG sees it !

I thought it was great when he got the insurance under control (hopefully) with GIC. I was very disappointed when about 1-2 weeks later he announced budget increases all around, effectively negating the projected savings of switching to GIC. Made me wonder if that was the price he paid to get the unions to agree to it. Maybe I missed something but the economy is still in rough shape despite what Ted may think.

Hey Bob. What do you think about the rumor that Tom Gould is going to run against Ted for mayor next year?

I call BS. And refuse to give it credibility by commenting further.

ok–so for all these years many anti administration bloggers have pounded the Emperor and Mayor Mike for not fixing and addressing the downtown flooding problem….for years each of them were questioned as to how many studies had to be done and how many downtown businesses suffered due to political inaction and resolved on this issue……for years each of them lobbied for state and federal funds with the hope that the big burden would not fall on Dark City residents….and now along comes Teflon Ted and you want to call off the hounds just to make sure we get it right?? you seem to be giving out an awful lot of Mulligans while OG sits here on the 19th hole drowning my sorrows in a state of watchful waiting….
